Guppy’s Easy Scones

Guppy’s Easy Scones

When choosing the perfect first post for this blog, one recipe stood out above all others: my grandmother’s scones. We all have that one special dish that can instantly transport us back in time, bringing comfort and joy with every bite. For me, it’s my grandmother’s (Guppy’s) easy scones. Simple yet sublime, blending the tartness of dried cranberries with the sweet surprises of chocolate chips. Each bite is a nostalgic journey, a tribute to the love that only a cherished family recipe can bring.

Origin Story

These scones have been a cherished part of my family’s kitchen since I was a child. Growing up, I was blessed to have my grandparents living with us. Their influence on my love for cooking and baking has been profound. My grandfather (Grampy) took over dinner duties during the week, while my grandmother (Guppy) reigned as the Queen of Baking. As this blog will feature a range of recipes, I’m thrilled to kick things off by sharing one of Guppy’s standout creations—her scones. These recipes are not just about food; they’re about preserving the warmth and joy that Grampy and Guppy brought into our lives through their cooking.

Family lore has it there are countless variations of this scone recipe, each family member claiming to have the “perfect” version. But in my heart, there’s only one standout recipe: Guppy’s. Her scones aren’t your average treat—they include the usual dried fruit, along with a delightful addition of chocolate chips. The true secret, though? Guppy would ALWAYS use the cherry infused craisins! You can use any dried fruit within the recipe with the most common additive being run-of-the-mill craisins. However! If you want to elevate it to new heights, the cherry infused variant is the way to go.

Helpful Tools

Whenever dealing with baking, it is always best to have a set of handy and reliable tools at your disposal for a wide range of tasks! For this recipe, I always use two specific items in my inventory: a measuring mat and a scraper. The measuring mat I use (linked here) is incredibly helpful in ensuring I have the perfect size for my scones. As you will see in the recipe, you have to pat the dough into 2 separate 6″ circles, and by using a baking mat with pre-measured rings on it, you forego any unnecessary eyeballing. The scraper on the other hand (linked here) allows for you to cut through the dough circles in one smooth slice, as it is also perfectly measured at 6″ long. Not only that, but it also helps with cleaning up any excess flour that may have fallen onto the countertop 🙂

We all have that one special dish that can instantly transport us back in time, evoking memories of comfort and joy with every bite. For me, it’s these scones—simple yet sublime, blending the tartness of dried cranberries with the sweet surprises of chocolate chips. Each bite is a nostalgic journey, a tribute to the love and warmth that only a cherished family recipe can bring.

Ingredients

  • Dough
  • 2 cups all purpose flour

  • 1 Tbsp baking powder

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 1/2 cup dried fruit (rec: cherry infused craisins!)

  • 1/4 cup chocolate chips

  • 1 1/4 cups heavy cream

  • Glaze
  • 3 Tbsp butter melted

  • 2 Tbsp granulated sugar

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 425˚
  • Combine the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar in a bowl and stir with a  fork to mix well.
  • Add dried fruit and chocolate chips. Give a few stirs with the fork to incorporate evenly.
  • Stir in the cream and mix until dough holds together (will be sticky) before transferring to a lightly floured board.
  • Knead the dough 8 or 9 times, taking care not to overwork it or melt the chocolate chips.
  • Split the dough in half and pat into 2 separate circles, both being 6″ in diameter.
  • Cut each dough circle into 8 even pieces (like a pizza).
  • Place on an ungreased baking sheet, leaving ~1″ of space between each piece.
  • For the glaze, spread the butter over the top and sides of each piece, followed by a sprinkle of sugar across the tops!
  • Bake for about 11 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Allow to cool on a wire rack before enjoying with a cup of coffee, tea, or milk!

Notes

  • You can use any dried fruit for this recipe, but I recommend the cherry infused craisins!
